Africatown

The Ecological Apartheid

In the deep South of the United States, on the Mobile River, Africatown is an enclave established by former slaves, illegally brought in from Benin in 1860 on the Clotilda slave ship, fifty years after the Act Prohibiting Importation of Salves was passed. Around it, the Mobile Bay is going through a significant economical and industrial development facilitated by minimal environmental regulations and marine access, with chemical facilities setting up and threatening its community and the entire bay.
